We need a proper POSTURE for good alignment of the skeletal frame which allows for more balance between the tension and relaxation in the bodies muscles and as a result balance and flexibility of the breath support muscles.
We use several muscles during breathing, movement and the making of the vocalized sound which is called Phonation. The most essential Breath Support Muscles in the mid body are:
The Diaphragm - which sits under the rib cage and lowers and expands during inhalation and rises up into a curved dome shape to rest under the last few ribs of the rib cage while exhaling. Five large muscles are used while breathing out, which give the powerful energy push while vocalising just before inhalation takes place again. These are:
Latissimus Dorsi - These are two large muscles on either side of the back seen as the large muscles expanded by body builders and weight lifters while muscling up.
The Diaphragm Muscle - It is attached to the end of the ribs and intercostals all the way to the back at the spine. This is the major muscle used for breathing. The Diaphragm is at rest while the Abdominal muscles energize the air stream for sound to be made by the spinning air just above the vocal cords in the larynx. The abdominal muscles are used as a part of the supporting mechanism for making sound during vocalization.
